This was made for Veronica for the Jily Secret Santa. Merry Christmas xxx
Christmas at Hogwarts was magical; no-one ever thought to argue that. Whether from Muggle families, Wizarding families or any other kind of family, it was an unspoken rule that Christmas at Hogwarts was more special, more beautiful, and more magical than Christmas anywhere else. Despite the freezing weather and the piling up of exam preparation, even the seventh years were able to appreciate the beauty of it all. The suits of armour all wore Santa Claus hats, the staircase railings were lined with tinsel, there were more trees than one would care to count and each one was intricately decorated, the ceiling in the Hall was almost constantly showing falling snowflakes and even the teachers were getting into the Christmas spirit.
It seemed that almost everyone was getting into the Christmas spirit. Or, at least, almost everyone.
“Come on, Lils, just take a break. Half an hour. Half an hour and then I’ll leave you alone to do your… whatever it is you’re doing.” Came the voice of one James Potter, who’d been watching his redheaded girlfriend slave away over a long roll of parchment for almost three hours now. It wasn’t that he was tired of watching her – he didn’t think there’d ever come a time when he wasn’t perfectly content simply to just observe the way she tucked loose strands of hair behind her ear, or the way she gently bit her lip when she was unsure of something – but he could see that she was growing increasingly frustrated, and with Christmas tomorrow, he was having none of that.
“I don’t have half an hour to spare, James. Do you realise how much work there is to get done before lessons go back? Flitwick’s given us five rolls of parchment on the most common mishaps when attempting a Patronus; Slughorn’s making us perfect a Felix Felicis; We have Binns’ essay about the 1186 Dragon Rights Movement, which I actually think he was present for because- ” Lily was unwillingly cut off as James finally had enough of her torturing herself and had grabbed hold of her hand and pulled her out of her seat, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes.
“Half an hour. That’s all I’m asking.”
Lily sighed and pursed her lips, glancing back at the mountain of parchment and the scattered bottles of ink, and then she looked to James again and gave him one curt nod. James beamed.
“Excellent. Now - ” as he clicked his fingers, numerous candles were lowered from the ceiling, the angel at the top of the Common Room tree lit up, and an old Christmas carol began playing from the old radio near them. “Relax, okay? It’s Christmas. You deserve a break.” Still uncertain, Lily began to protest, but she was quietened by James finger over her lips, and he grinning widely and glanced up above them, where mistletoe had appeared, seemingly from nowhere.
“Relax.” As Lily finally seemed to give up protesting, James leant forward and very gently pressed his lips to hers, a tiny hum of approval escaping his lips as he tasted the sweetness of Lily’s warm lips. James was the only one able to change Lily’s mind, and he took full advantage of that fact on many occasions, but he felt that now was a particularly important one. Lily closed her eyes and leant in as well, her head tilting a little as she kissed him back, any disagreement now forgotten as her lips moved against his in a familiar and rhythmic dance. When they finally pulled apart, somewhat reluctantly, James wore a tiny smirk, and Lily’s lips were swollen.
“Half an hour.” She murmured, but the smile on her lips told a different story, and James knew she was finally his for the night. He rested his hands on her hips and his forehead against hers, glad for the privacy they’d been allowed as most of the other Gryffindors had gone home for the holidays.
“And what do you know?” he whispered against her lips, his smirk still present. “It’s Christmas.” Lily glanced up as the clock struck midnight, indicating that it was, indeed, now Christmas. She grinned and pecked his lips, her arms loosely wrapping around his neck as she chuckled very quietly.
“Merry Christmas, Potter.”
“Merry Christmas, Evans. Want your present, then?” James pulled away from her with a wide grin on his face, rummaging through his bag as Lily raised her eyebrows, not having expected a gift.
“Er – ” she began, but was once more cut off, as James finally pulled out a rather messily wrapped package from his bag and handed it to her, eagerly awaiting her reaction. Lily grinning excitedly and sat down in one of the armchairs and began to unwrap, glancing up at James occasionally so they could share a smile. As she pulled the last of the wrapping, Lily gasped very softly, her eyes widening as they fell upon James’ gift. A necklace, silver and delicate, accentuated with a tiny, hanging snowflake, and as she looked closer, Lily could see that engraved in tiny letters, were the initials, ‘J.P’ and ‘L.E’. Looking up at an anticipatory James, Lily’s eyes filled with tears, and for a moment, James thought there was something wrong.
“It’s… beautiful.” She whispered softly, and James relaxed, visibly pleased with himself for remembering the right one after she’d spotted it in a shop window in Hogsmeade a while back. After pulling him close to kiss him again, Lily leant forward to allow James to put it on her, and he tenderly brushed her hair over to one shoulder, scattering tiny kisses across her back as he clipped up the necklace.
“Beautiful.” He murmured, and Lily beamed.
“I have something for you, too.” She said as she stood up and clapped her hands together once, before bounding over to the table she was working at and picking up a larger package. She passed it over, and James eagerly tore into it with no abandon, rather resembling a small child opening a toy.
“Lily!” he exclaimed as he let the wrapping paper fall to the floor, his eyes bright and joyful. “Lily, you- It’s- ” He stumbled over his words and his eyes darted from his gift, to his girlfriend. “I bloody love you, Evans.” He finally managed, and Lily giggled and sat down beside him. She’d given him a limited edition copy of a book on Quidditch history, something she knew he’d desperately wanted, but had missed out on a copy when he went to buy one.
Both utterly content in each other’s company, and both immensely satisfied with their gifts, James and Lily curled up on the couch together, James arms around Lily, who’s head was resting on his shoulder, her eyelids beginning to droop as the fire started to twindle.
“Merry Christmas, Potter.”
“Merry Christmas, Evans.”

A song for James and Lily.
I’m sorry for everything,
He came in through the door so quickly, I had no time.
And even though I knew I’d die,
I still wish I had turned around to say one last goodbye, Lily.
Please tell him I love him,
And that I’ll always be there.
And though I’m soaked in blood now,
I just want him to know I’ll always care, and that…
CHORUS:
I’m going home
Home to a place
A place I must go
A place you will go someday
I’m going there
Where I’ll be awake
Though my eyes are closed
I’m going home
I’m going home
Don’t be sorry for anything, James.
It took me long enough to pull away from your side.
And as my screams fell upon deaf ears,
I knew my only choice was for him to take my own life.
I’ll tell him we love him,
And that we’ll always be there.
And though my heart won’t beat for much longer,
I’ll let him know that we will always care, and that…
I’m going home
Home to a place
A place I must go
A place you will go someday
I’m going there
Where I’ll be awake
Though my eyes are closed
I’m going home
I’m going home
